As the cars made their way out to qualify, it was pouring down and Robb had never yet driven the car in the rain on wet tyres so it was going to be interesting for him.
There wasn't a lap that went by where someone didn't go off. The circuit was very slippery and covered in mud and grass where other people had rejoined the track. Steve Alderton was looking for his first win of 2002 in his Honda and put it on pole position four thousandths quicker than Robb. Danny Mills was an excellent third in his Rover and was on pole for his class. Dave Mellor qualified seventh and Scott Tanner was fourteenth overall and fifth in the Rover class.
The race was dry and as they left the start Robb tried the outside at Gerrards but Alderton held on to the lead. They both went down the back straight nose to tail; Robb trying everything to get past but Alderton again resisted. As they approached the hairpin on lap one, Robb went to the outside, hoping for a good drive out. He got alongside Alderton and just pulled past him before completing the first lap. As the race progressed, Robb inched away to win by 4.8 seconds and setting yet another fastest lap and lap record!
Dave Mellor was having a good battle and got up to fourth, a position he held until the flag. Scott Tanner was another good fifth, having had a race long battle with everything and everyone and yet again, came in with a straight car, probably the only Rover not to be damaged this year.
Danny Mills seemed to be suffering straight line speed a little and dropped to third in the Rovers behind Mark Speller and eventual Rover winner Ron Field. Despite this upset for Danny, he's still in the lead of the Championship for the Rovers as is Robb for the Hondas.
