RACE REPORT

ROUND 2 - PEMBREY

The cars and drivers made the long trek to Wales for the weekend for two races.

After rebuilding his car, Dave Mellor qualified on pole position for Saturday's race ahead of Robb and Paul Naish.  Scott Tanner was 9th on the grid with some work to do.  Two seconds behind pole was Simon Byrne.

As the cars set off, it was Mellor who led and half way round the first lap.  Robb had a huge slide, allowing Mellor to ease away and the closing pack, headed by Naish, Golhar and Olsson, were breathing down Robb's exhaust.  With a blinding second lap, which was to be the fastest lap of the race, Robb pulled up behind Mellor and pulled away from the trio behind.

Meanwhile Tanner was having a good battle in the mid pack trying to make up places from a slightly unhappy qualifying performance.

As the race went on, Mellor was coming under more and more pressure from Robb, until lap 9 when he finally cracked and missed his braking for the hairpin. Robb slipped through and the following lap, Mellor made a similar mistake which left Robb in the clear and from there he went on to win by 2.8 seconds over Mellor.  Nick Golhar came home in 3rd, just 4 tenths of a second ahead of Paul Naish in 4th.

Scott Tanner had managed to get himself up to 7th in the Maestros after a good fight throughout the race and managed to go about 7 tenths of a second quicker in the race.

ROUND 3 - PEMBREY

With the weather a lot worse than Saturday it was going to make it very interesting as the cars went out for practice in the very wet, tricky, conditions.

Once again, Mellor took pole position, 3 tenths of a second ahead of Robb with Andy Campbell an excellent 3rd overall and 1st in the Maestros.  Scott Tanner was delighted with 6th position, getting more and more confident in the car, in which he is planning to be his first full season since 1998.

As the cars set off for their warm-up lap, the weather hand't eased up, still raining hard.  The lights went out and Mellor took the lead followed by Robb and then Stratton Mackay leading the Maestros in only his second race in the series.  Tanner had got himself into 5th and as they cam round to complete the first lap, robb had another huge moment coming onto the start, finishing straight and leaving Mellor a handsome lead, only to be lost again as the race was red flagged as one of the Jackson brothers had beached the car out at the hairpin.

On the restart, Robb took the lead from Mellor and it was going to be a dog-fight to the end.  Robb was struggling to stop the car as he had a rear brake problem which was locking the nearside wheel.  Mellor instantly knew this and was making dives down the inside and outside of every corner.  Side by side, they raced for seven laps.  Robb still fending off Mellor until he plunged down the outside at Hatchetts Hairpin on the brakes and somehow managed to turn in ahead of Robb and snatch the lead.  From here he went on to win by 1.8 seconds and amazingly Robb still managed to sneak in the fastest lap with his problems.

Meanwhile Paul Naish had some from the back of the grid to finish an excellent 3rd ahead of Kelly-Anne Mercer who had her best result in the ZR Class.

Simon Byrne won the Maestro Class ahead of Andy Campbell and Henry Sharpe.  Scott Tanner was sitting in a comfortable 3rd place until 3 laps from the end, when a drive flange collapsed, putting him out of the race.  A great shame after a sterling drive in the rain to nearly claim his first silverware of the season.
