The morning of qualifying, the weather was superb we were hoping that this would last all day fortunately it did, a lot of very red faces were walking around by the end of the day. Anyway qualifying started and Robb got off to a good start. After 3 laps we were sitting on pole position which was great, our new MG Maestro was on the pace and it didn’t take Robb long to get used to driving one again. He came in a couple of laps early as he felt that he couldn’t go any faster and didn’t want to over heat the car and not race. Unfortunately we were pipped for Pole Position on the final lap by Simon Byrn by just a tenth of a second. Not to worry as 2nd place on the grid was good enough for our first time back in the championship. As I walked back to the paddock I could see a lot of very familiar faces (from other teams) were looking very glum as they hadn’t thought Robb would be on the pace, (They were worried).
Race time was late afternoon, Robb took his grid position and all fingers were crossed hoping to get a good start and at least a race (after our last disasters in the Fiesta). We didn’t have to worry, lights went green and Robb took the lead into the first corner and pulling out around two car lengths from Simon Byrn and Darryl Davies (in an MG ZR Class Z car). As the rest of the pack came through Paddock Hill Bend there were cars going everywhere two of which ended up in the gravel forcing the race to be red flagged and stopped.
The grid was reformed for another start, once again Robb got a good start but Simon went with him two abreast going into Paddock Hill Bend (not that advisable) Simon had the inside while Robb stayed outside. They carried on up the hill to Druids where Simon again had the inside line and Robb was forced to settle in behind him, with Darryl third. This stayed like this for a good few laps, Robb putting pressure on Simon and Darryl putting pressure on Robb. With around 4 laps to go, Darryl managed to get past Robb on the Start-Finish straight for second. He then went on to take Simon for the lead. This was how it finished with Robb taking Second in class, a great start to our new season.
Simon was the Third driver to win this year in the championship and therefore it is still wide open, we can still do it!!!!!!!!!!
